Q&A with Stylist Beth Goodrham

What are your fave AW styles?

Great question! There are so many to choose from! Leopard print, metallic, trench coats, slip dresses, graphic sweats, heritage and tailoring - I’m there for them all.

The way I like to incorporate new styles is by re-working what I already own and adding in a few new season pieces. Year on year my look doesn’t change too much. I’ve figured out what suits me, what I like and what I’m comfortable in - but I’ll add a reference to the new season styles to keep things fresh and up to date.

That might look like a new silhouette of jeans, a blouse in a current print, a tailored blazer or some fresh accessories. Generally it’s nothing drastic but just enough to keep me where I want to be fashion wise.

Go to party looks?

Ah, now that depends! If I don’t have to walk too far and if I’m going full on sparkle, I’ll pull out some All Saints 70s inspired platform heels and a short sequin wrap dress that I wore to a Harry Styles concert last year. I’ll pair it with black opaque tights and put a black turtleneck underneath, just to off-set the sparkle.

For a trip to the pub you can’t go wrong with jeans and sparkly top. I’ve got a long sleeved turtle neck one from &Other Stories which I’ve had for a few years and I’m always asked where it’s from. I like to wear it with barrel leg jeans or boyfriend jeans, a leather jacket and sparkly block heels.

As an alternative to sparkles I look at the silhouette, or the texture, of the pieces I’m wearing. That might look like a full tulle skirt with a fitted sweater, or leather leggings with an oversized silk blouse. And if I’m going to be outside, I adore a cropped fur jacket.

I love that party looks really allow us to step out of the everyday and have fun with our look.

Fave places to shop?

I love Zara, H&M and M&S for everyday basics. Me & Em, Sandro and Maje are places I look for a treat, and perhaps buy from in the sales. There are also the B Corp Certified brands that I love to support such as Baukjen, Free People and Nobody’s Child. And then there are all the wonderful online brands that I look to for interesting and different pieces, which can add personality to a wardrobe whilst at the same time supporting small businesses.

Are you a hoarder or a declutter?

Honestly, I’d say I’m an organised hoarder! I buy very little now but I have lots of pieces from lovely brands going back 20 years which have great memories attached to them. I like to look through them each season and breathe new life into them by re-styling them with a new season style of jean, or an up to date pair of boots.

New or preloved?

Preloved - largely my own! But new when things have worn out. When I was about 9 I had a horrible experience at school, getting into trouble through no fault of my own. It was the same day that I was wearing a skirt and blouse that my Mum had bought me from a jumble sale. I went off pre-loved after that as I thought they brought me bad luck! But I am always happy to lend my clothes to people so that’s another way I use pre-loved in my life.

Fave pieces from the Scott-Samuel collection?

Your leather geometric bag. I love the size, shape and colours that it comes in. When I look at it, I’m trying to figure out how it all fits together, so it holds my interest and it’s beautifully structured which always adds instant polish to an outfit.

Oversized balaclava hood - this is such a fabulous way to update an existing winter coat. It can totally change the feel of it, taking a tailored coat from something which feels quite “City” to something which is way more relaxed and up to date.

Sparkly socks! There’s nothing worse than opening a sock drawer and seeing pairs of holey, mis-matched, uninspiring socks. Sparkly socks instantly brighten my day, whether they’re on show at home, or hidden inside boots or trainers.

So Beth you’re a stylist.. what’s your favourite styling service to offer?

I’ve been styling for 15 years now and my favourite thing to do is to dive deep into the depths of people’s wardrobes and to create great outfits from what they already own.

Women have so many gems hidden under beds, in bottom drawers and at the back of wardrobes which they’re saving for best and meanwhile, they’re feeling uninspired by what they’re wearing on a daily basis.

Those hidden gems are the pieces that need to see the light of day.  Oh and I love identifying a few key pieces that bring everything together. It’s like watching magic unfold.

You’ve recently launched Style Guile. Such a great idea! Tell me a bit about that?

Style Guile is a digital magazine which comes out quarterly. It’s for women who can’t find what they want in other magazines; either because the pieces featured are unrelatable, because they’re expensive, or because they’re limited in size and leg length.

I purposefully choose new season trends which are easy to incorporate into a busy life and I show at least four different ways to wear the trend. Each item is hyperlinked to the brand’s website making shopping easy and I select high street pieces at a good price point and which are offered in a wide range of sizes and different leg lengths.

My aim is to help women feel inspired by the outfits and shop their wardrobe to create their versions of the outfits.

At the same time, it’s designed to help save time, money and overwhelm. I’ve yet to find a woman who isn’t stretched in a million directions and Style Guile is here to help them feel put together and on top of their game, even if they’re furiously paddling like a duck underneath the surface!

For anyone who would like to take a closer look, Style Guile costs £15 and is available from the shop on my website HERE  and people are always welcome to drop me a message on Instagram at BethGoodrham
